Vertical gardens are harmonious compositions of plants carefully planted into panels or modules which are fixed to the walls (external vertical gardens) or to the walls (internal vertical gardens), but can also be supported by special structures.
The hydroponic cultivation method allows a constant water supply of rainwater and fertilizers, through drip systems placed in the upper part of the wall and there is no need for soil.
But let’s take a closer look at what it really is.
Irrigation and fertilization
These are the fundamental treatments for all varieties used in plant walls. To guarantee water and fertilizer, automatic systems incorporated in the plants themselves are often used, by means of manifolds arranged horizontally at different levels of the wall.
These collectors are connected to vertical riser tubes that run through the structure in height, distributing the nutrients to all the plants. If the system is equipped with a closed-cycle irrigation system, the water used is rainwater, stored in collection tanks at the base of the wall.
The hydroponic cultivation method is also used, which allows a constant water supply of rainwater and fertilizers, through drip systems placed in the upper part of the wall.
Placement of plants
The positioning of the different plant species must also take into account the micro-climatic conditions that vary depending on the height, since in most cases the walls rise significantly from the ground.
For this reason, they settle at ground level, where the shade is greater than the highest and brightest part of the wall, of the varieties more resistant to humidity and cold. In fact, temperature and brightness can be different at the base and at the top, favoring the growth of one or the other.
