Designing and planting a living wall can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but in order to ensure its success, proper planning is essential. A well planned irrigation set up will ensure healthy and thriving plants. Our Living Wall Irrigation 101 is here to help you understand the basics of irrigation to help you make the right decisions for your living wall.
Selecting the right Irrigation method for your Living Wall
Regardless of which vertical system you use, there are 3 types of irrigation set up.
- Direct water system
- Recirculating water system
- Manual watering
The best irrigation set up type for any Living Wall is having the ability to connect directly to the water line. When that is not possible the alternative option is a recirculating water system. This method uses a reservoir tank below the living wall with a pump to suck up and recycle water. In some case manual watering is also possible, especially for small size living walls or outdoor locations.
Planning your irrigation system
New constructions vs existing spaces
For new constructions, adding a Living Wall into the space is the best case scenario, as you can plan out the irrigation prior to building or during the construction phase of the space. For existing spaces, you may need to consider one of 2 options: identify if possible to run a water line from existing plumbing or implementing a recirculating water system.
Indoor vs Outdoor
The irrigation method is also determined by the physical location of the living wall. An outdoor vertical wall will most likely connect to a direct water system, while an indoor vertical living wall may vary based on the ability to run a water line.
Direct Water Line vs Recirculating vs Manual Watering Systems
Direct water line
Direct water line system provides an efficient and effective way to water green walls, connecting directly to a water pipe sources in your home or space. With the existing water pressure in the pipes, water can reach your living wall without any additional mechanical components such a water pump.
Recirculating water system
Recirculating water system provides a solution for green walls whenever a direct water line set up is not possible. A recirculating water system pulls water from a reservoir tank below the living wall and consists of a tank, motorized pump and timer that will automatically dispense water to the plant as needed.
Both direct and recirculating watering methods will need to be set up as drip irrigation system.
What is a drip irrigation system?
A drip irrigation system is an efficient water distribution while limiting losses due to evaporation. This method slowly serves the plants roots, providing precise and targeted hydration for optimal plant health. Generally, it consists of a main plastic irrigation pipe connected with emitters (drippers). The emitters are placed directly above the vertical paneling system, allowing water to slowly and evenly trickle down. Manual watering
Manual watering is the simplest water system methods. It does not require any set up, as the water is provided manually with a watering can or hose. This however, requires more commitment and labor in order to keep the living wall hydrated and healthy. It also has a higher chance of over-watering or under-watering which could lead to plant damage.
In conclusion, the irrigation method for your living wall should be tailored to meet the Living Wall specific needs and conditions. Whether you choose direct water source, recirculating water system, or manual watering, it is important to properly plan out and understand each option prior to installation. That way you can ensure that your living wall is well-irrigated and stays in peak condition.
Enjoy the journey of designing and installing your Living Wall! With proper planning, maintenance, and water management you’ll have a beautiful and successful green space for years to come.
