Living walls are a great way to bring nature indoor, but many people have questions about their maintenance. In our experience the biggest misconception about Living Wall and maintenance is that Living walls are hard to care for. It’s no secret that plants require some attention to stay alive but caring for a living wall doesn’t have to be complicated and Living walls can be successfully maintained by following few simple guidelines established by the installer, consultant or designer who help plan for your wall.

First of all indoor Living Walls are set up with an automated irrigation system that runs on a timer. The watering schedule and duration is set up by the Living Wall Installer and most likely not going to change much. In our experience, and with Living Wall done with our Cork Vertical System, the first 3 months are the most important for plants acclimation, watering schedule fine tuning and few possible plant replacements. After that, our Living Walls are fully sustainable and will only required maintenance / check up quarterly or when necessary especially if you follow the following tips below:

Living Wall maintenance tips that will help keep them looking great:

  • Periodically check irrigation system and adjust automated watering schedule (daily/weekly/monthly) for change of season (AC vs Centralize Heating)
  • Monthly checkup on Living Wall, make sure all plants are hydrated properly.
  • Quarterly checkup for dead or dying plants or plant decay and remove as needed
  • Check if anything is blocking water flow (leaves/soil/debris)

If you’re still not convinced that Living Walls are the way to go for your home or business, consider this: a study by NASA found that indoor plants can improve air quality by up to 60%. Plants also play an important role in human health and well-being. They reduce stress, filter out harmful toxins from the air, and contribute to better productivity in the workplace. So before you decide that living walls may be too much work, think about all of the benefits that come with having plants in your home or office space… perhaps the best solution for your Living Wall Investment is to hire a professional landscaper to provide a peace of mind and the assurance that your beautiful Living Wall will thrive for many years.
